A blueprint for education data:realising children’s best interests in digitised education
Technical Report.
Digital Futures Commission, 5Rights Foundation, London, UK.
School is compulsory for almost all children. It is central to their childhood and their path to adulthood. If children must be at school, it surely follows that their rights must be upheld in school settings, including their right to data protection. The introduction of EdTech in schools has not always provided a safe and secure environment. As this blueprint sets out, there is widespread invasion of children’s privacy, little evidence to support the claimed learning benefits, and perhaps most important in the long run, no grand plan for using children’s data in their best interests.
