What effect does national identity have on attitudes toward immigration? Clara Sandelind writes that it is not so much the strength of an individual’s national identity that determines whether they view immigration as a threat, but rather how an individual identifies with their country. She notes that those who identify with their country in an ethnic-cultural sense are more negative toward immigration than those who have a civic national identity.
