Despite a strong public lead, non-government investment in the conservation of Latin American historic centres has been limited. Nevertheless, evidence drawn particularly from Bogota, Cartagena and Quito shows that the local and international private sector, and civic and multi-lateral organizations, have undertaken a number of innovative investment projects. The paper concludes with a discussion of how the public sector can encourage further private investment that is sensitive to conservation requirements.
