Indeterminism forces a conceptual shift concerning our most rooted intuitions about causation, which are mostly related to deterministic world-views, as reflected in scientific theories such classical physics. Methods of causal inference based on the idea of probabilistic causality, such as the Principle of the Common Cause (PCC), provide a suitable framework to cope with that shift. A number of problems however still remain. We offer here an overview of the main philosophical implications as well as the diverse arguments for and against the PCC - both at the metaphysical and the methodological level - in indeterministic contexts.
