As a first year research student, this poster represents and outline of my proposed research project. The study aims to address a history of one of the most stigmatized epidemics: leprosy. Cyprus was plagued by this contagious disease for centuries until a cure was found in the mid-20th century. The project will cover the late Ottoman and the British periods on the island, focusing specifically on the Leper Village. The Leper Village, also referred to as the Leper Farm, was established in the 1790s a mile away from Nicosia, and it moved to Larnaca in 1955 upon the discovery of a cure. In short, my study focuses on the history of leprosy in the Near and Middle East, while using the Leper Village as an example since it covers both the Ottoman and British periods in a multi-community island.
