It is well known that the population is ageing but the implications for policy, and the statistics needed to inform policy, are the subject of current discussion amongst demographers. In June 2006 the Economic and social research Council (ESRC) commissioned a report as part of its 'Mapping the public policy landscape' series. The report examines recent evidence on a range of important topics including how partnership status and wider kinship network impact on peoples lives in old age; and provided further insight into how demographic events during the life course might be predictive of outcomes in old age.
