Examines legislative and case law developments in liability for drink driving offences imposed on third party alcohol suppliers in the US, building on historical "dram shop" laws. Considers whether the same level of third party liability can be applied in the UK under principles of tort law, highlighting its emergence in Canada and other Commonwealth countries. Considers implications for alcohol providers and on indemnity insurance, with details of US case law. Explores the extension of third party liability to employers, under vicarious liability, and to "social hosts" who have provided alcohol at private functions.
