This paper traces the evolution of concepts such as community, locality and place, paying attention to the intellectual forces responsible for their emergence. It further draws attention to recent developments in respect of localist discourses regarding social capital and economic development. This is a prelude to a presentation of and introduction to the papers contained in this special issue.
