The 1877 tsunami devastated the coast of Landlocked District of Atacama (Bolivia) which Chile annexed two years later (today, Antofagasta Region). The micro history of earthquake effects in the coastal town before landing in Chile, is used to explore the theater of the Pacific War and its aftermath. This paper analyzes trends in Bolivian state to the emerging regionalist and cosmopolitan spirit of the pioneers who settled the land, attracted by the guano trade, and silver nitrate. The ravages of the earthquake are the backdrop to the des--Peruvianization and des-bolivianization and the conquered territories and the corresponding Chileanization memory of regional population.
