Family mediation practice in the United Kingdom has been self-regulated voluntarily from its early beginnings but more recently subject to government regulation with the advent of public funding for family mediation. The article traces the development of this regulatory framework, exploring some of the central tensions that have shaped the emergence of family mediation as a distinct and autonomous professional intervention.
