This essay explores the background to the famous interview in 1936 when Roy W. Howard was allowed to interview Stalin and the release of the interview to the U.S. agencies that were in fierce competition with each other. It also examines the relations between three national news agencies in two countries: the U.S. privately-owned UP, the cooperatively owned AP, and the Soviet state-owned ROSTA that was later changed into TASS.
