Based on the author's PhD thesis at the London School of Economics and Political Science, England, this study examines the political, financial, and emotional difficulties affecting British residential therapeutic services for children and young people. Using interviews with the staff from some 50 residential units and purchaser agencies and many other sources, Street outlines the shift in UK welfare policy, explores specialist services, presents data on child psychiatric and behavioral disorders in the UK, reviews the costs of services, discusses international policy influences, analyzes the results of her fieldwork, and offers conclusions.
