This is a redrafted version of Alex Mayhew's Dennis Showalter Memorial Lecture 2022. Originally delivered at the National Army Museum in March 2023, the piece was reworked in early 2025. Drawing upon the author's work to date, it considers what the concept of crisis offers historians, how the Great War was underpinned by crisis, and briefly explores the experience of crisis during the Frist World War.
