Repeated exposure to urban violence harms the academic performance of New York City school children.

How does exposure to violence in children’s local neighborhoods affect how they perform at school? In new research Agustina Laurito uses student-level data from New York City to investigate how exposure to violence affects students’ test performances. She finds that the students who live in the most violent neighborhoods do become sensitized to violence and that their academic performance suffers as a result.
