The first cut is the deepest: criminological texts and the return of the repressed

McKenzie (criminal justice studies, U. of Portsmouth, UK) and Bull (psychology, U. of Portsmouth, UK) asked contributors to select between three to six books, monographs, pieces of legislation, government document, or other publications from the 20th century that they felt had substantial impact on them. They were asked to describe and critique the publications and discuss the impact of them on formulating or developing their own research within their particular areas of criminology. The resulting 9 papers were grouped into four sections on the criminal justice core, police culture, the role of police, and crime investigation. Specific themes that arise from the papers include the theoretical bases of criminology, the anti- intellectualism of the police environment, and the development of "public police" in the UK and North America.
