Will Bosnia break up? Could Republika Srpska really secede?

Will Bosnia and Herzegovina break apart? In this video, I explore whether Republika Srpska, the country's predominantly Bosnian Serb inhabited entity, could really secede. It has now been almost two and a half decades since the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina (BiH) came to an end. However, the country remains fragile. There is frequent speculation that Republika Srpska could try to break away and either form its own independent state or unite with neighbouring Serbia. As I explain, both scenarios are very unlikely for a number of legal, political and practical reasons. Moreover, claims that Russia might be willing to support an act of secession should be treated with caution. Nevertheless, while threats of secession would seem baseless, they should not be ignored or dismissed. The mere claim by Bosnian Serb leaders that Republika Srpska could break away is proving to be enough to undermine stability in the country and raise tensions.
