These are the replication files for ‘How Africans Shaped British Colonial Institutions: Evidence from Local Taxation’, published in the December 2020 issue of the Journal of Economic History. They include indicators of institutional capacity and economic development for African local governments, known as ‘Native Authorities’ in four British colonies: the Gold Coast (Ghana), Nigeria, Kenya, and Nyasaland (now Malawi) in 1948.
